Authentication - Technologies and Categorisation

According to ISO, there are different kinds of authentication technologies available in the market although these technologies are applied in the three main ares of:

All these techologies can be categorised as either overt, covert, forensic or digital.

Overt technologies
All devices built into labels, documents and packaging which are visible to the user and show dynamic visual effects fall under this category. These are ment for fast and easy on the spot visual authentication.

Covert technologies
Apart from the requirement of a special reader or detector to verify their presence and validity, it also requires trained professionals. These include ultraviolet & infrared inks, micro text, unique synthetic tagging etc.

Forensic technologies
Forensic technologies, being convert, are not readily recognisable and require special tools for detection and validation. These must often be taken to a laboratory with specialised equipment for validation.

Digital technologies
Digital technologies may be either overt or covert, but all require an electronic means for detection and validation. These are mostly associated with RFID tags or with serialised numbers that can be compared to a remote database.

Hot Stamping Foil (HSF)

Hot stamping is the process of transferring a very thin coating of metallised part onto paper or plastic through a combination of heat and pressure. These foils are manufactured by embossing of the hologram on lacquered metallic polyester film and then coated with special adhesive coating to enable the user to transfer the holographic image onto the surface using hot stamping machine. This is one of the fastest ways to apply holograms.

It is a permanent process where a part (usually logo) is marked with a properly formulated foil which can withstand some very harsh conditions. When using a metal die on the surface of the product. one can brand their products and even if the colour of the surface fades or wears off, the branded holographic image will remain.

Variants

Continuous or running Image: There are no particular patterns to be followed
Registered Image: When a particular design or a logo has to be stamped. application machine reads the scan mark from the foil and stamps the image onto the substrate or surface area
